Exclusive Email Interview With SaleHoo Community Manager, Jimmy Huber

Can you give me an introduction of yourself, when and how did you start out?
My name is Jimmy Huber and I’m an eBay seller and Community Manager for SaleHoo.com My wife and I started selling children’s clothing and DVDs on eBay in early 2004.
We later developed relationships with high-end retailers and formed the company Products Plus Wholesale Distribution.
This not only helped us to increase our profits on eBay, but also offer members of the SaleHoo community the opportunity to acquire bulk high-end products cheaply from a trustworthy source, rather than take the risk of losing money to liquidators cherry picking pallets.
I understand you have been selling on eBay or online for quite some time and are now successful. What do you think is the key factor to your success?
For us, the key thing was moving away from drop shippers and wholesalers and into liquidations.

When you are working with buyers, what is it that you are most proud of?
Our ability to handle almost any problem that arises. Our customer service has been an extremely important factor in the growth of our business.
What is the greatest challenge that you have faced while growing your career online?
Our biggest problem was with suppliers. We always chose the wrong ones! We wasted so much time buying items at wholesale price – but items frequently sell below wholesale on eBay.
Currently, what is the one tip you want to give to amateur and newbie eBay sellers?
If you’re selling on eBay you need to think outside the square. Making money with drop shippers is not as easy as the media makes it out to be. In fact, 99 % of drop shippers are out to get your money.
And because most things sell on eBay for below wholesale, you need to think of ways to get a better price on merchandise – whether that’s by buying in bulk or choosing a liquidator.
What are some of the areas do you think sellers always overlook when they sell on eBay?
Sellers always overlook the power of a complete description.
Many sellers sell items of high value for 0.99 cents when they could have sold the same item for $100 if they just taken the time to write a detailed description. Stop being in such a hurry, or you’ll lose your profit margin!
What do you think of the continuous eBay updates on policies?
I’m not too fond of them but it’s a part of life. Just deal with it or sell somewhere else.
Yes some of it stinks, but you can’t change what has been done.
Your final thought and advice for my online auctions blog readers?
Starting a company requires a lot of research, time and dedication.
Don’t pay attention to the late night infomercials and their stories of people starting a business with little to no start-up cash and turning into a millionaire overnight.
This is just sales fluff to get you to buy their package. It’s worth bearing in mind that 99% of the people that buy these programs never succeed.
It’s taken us several years to achieve success on eBay.
After that we started http://www.ppwdg.com to help members of the SaleHoo forum community and other online sellers benefit from what we learned along the way. We have helped hundreds of sellers become eBay powersellers over the past eight months – some do over $5,000 a month is sales.
Selling liquidation isn’t easy though. You have to be willing to work and learn how to sell this stuff for maximum profit.
We see sellers all the time who are too lazy to do anything other than press a few buttons. They write terrible descriptions and don’t take advantage of profitable selling strategies for certain items. Pretty soon, they run out of money and wonder what happened.
If you want to be successful on eBay, then you need to research and learn how to do it. Google everything you need to know.
People with the knowledge can become millionaires, but it’s not an overnight thing. It usually takes years. I personally work over 80+ hours a week in my warehouse.
Also, if you’re a home-based business, you’ve got to take it seriously. Don’t spend your profits. Use the profits to grow your business.
I hear way too many people say they are out of work and need to make money fast.
This doesn’t work. If you want to start a company online you need to be in a position to lose money. Until you learn the ropes, starting up a business inevitably involves making some profit… and some losses too.
When I expanded and created our company we lost over $16,000 in the first 4 months of operation. We are now running at a profit month-to-month in excess of $120,000 in sales.
If we gave up when the going was tough we would not be as successful as we are now.
So please make sure you are in a position to take a loss. Don’t view an online business as a last resort or you will get burned!
